About Astypalea

`The Portaitissa' is a must-see when going to this island, a immaculate monastery with whitewashed walls and turquoise domed roofs.

Also try some Astypalean specialities whilst there including poungia, a cheese pie made with locally-made kopanisti cheese and sweet Greek honey, and the freshly-caught seafood such as lobster and octopus. For archaeology fans, a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Astypalea is a must, as well as the Venetian ruins that are scattered around Astypalea.

Astypalea Port

Astypalea is full of whitewashed houses, amazing beaches and fruit orchards bursting with tangerines, olives and grapes. Like many Greek islands, Astypalea is full of breathtaking views of the ocean and the unique landscape that surrounds the main villages of Chora and Livadi. Ferries from Astypalea go to other Dodecanese Islands and to the Greek mainland, and can be booked through AFerry

Getting to Astypalea

Although there are roads in Astypalea, many of them are only dirt roads and may be quite dangerous. Because of this, and due to the small size of the island, it may be easier to either cycle or walk to the port from wherever you are on the island.

There is a bus service on Astypalea, going from Astypalea Chora to all the other villages in Astypalea, however this service is very limited.
