About Ghazaouet

Ghazaouet is a popular gateway to Algeria and all of North Africa. This port town, with a population of around 40,000 is well known for it's fresh fish and is well worth a visit in it's own right. In addition, easy road connections make it the ideal starting point for locations along the Algerian coast and even Morocco.

Ghazaouet is Algeria's westernmost port and has a history going back to Roman times. While under French rule, the port was renamed "Nemours" after a French aristocrat. Today, the town still retains a French feel with a covered market (don't forget to haggle) and central church.
