Juneau is the state capital of Alaska and one of the most beautiful and most visited cities in the state. The waterfront bustles with cruise ships, fishing boats and floatplanes, and Juneau is the only state capital in the USA that can only be reached by plane or boat. Just a short drive from the city centre lies Mendenhall Glacier, which sits within the Tongass National Forest. Visitors to the area can watch icebergs fall from the glacier into Mendenhall Lake, or go for a hike through the dramatic local landscape. Downtown Juneau nestles between Mount Juneau, Mount Roberts and the Gastineau Channel, and features a mix of new structures, old storefronts and quaint houses left over from the town's early gold mining days.
