The historic city of Kitakyushu, located in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu, while actually only founded in 1963 is based around the ancient feudal city of Kokura and represents the merger of five towns. The city has a population of about a million residents and has a larger area than Fukuoka itself. With a ferry from Tokyo or Tokushima, this wonderful city can easily be part of your itinerary.

Kitakyushu port facilities

Being a modern port serving a large city, you will find Kitakyushu port is equipped with all the facilities that you would expect. These include toilets, a waiting area and vending machines selling various snacks and cold drinks.

Getting to Kitakyushu port

By car from Fukuoka Kyushu

If coming down the IC Shinmoji Kyushu Expressway, turn right at the exit signal, a prefectural road No. 71 and then go straight for about 700 metres.

Turn left at the intersection field then go straight for 200m on the prefectural road No. 25.

Turn right at the intersection north of the Shinmoji harbour entrance. Go straight for about 700m. After the Shinmojikita intersection, turn right at the first intersection. The terminal is next to Hankyu-ferry.

By car from Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Chugoku Expressway or the Sanyo Expressway

On the IC Moji Kyushu, turn left at the intersection after the road towards the general inter-Moji then turn left at the intersection Kurokawa. Go straight for about 4km on the prefectural road on Route 25.

Turn left at the intersection north of the harbor entrance Shinmoji. Straight about 700m. After straight-chome intersection Shinmojikita, turn right at the first intersection.

The terminal is next to Hankyu-ferry.

Please note, you will not be able to use the exit "IC Shinmoji" Coming from Hiroshima Yamaguchi. Please use the IC Moji.

By train from JR Moji station

Please note that the name of the station closest to the port is is JR Moji station, not JR Moji-kou station.

There is a direct bus service from the station to the ferry terminal. It departs 70 minutes before the ferry departure time. If you wish to use this service, ask the station staff at the ticket barrier.

About Kitakyushu

Kitakyushu is the northernmost city on Japan's Kyushu Island. The city was formed in 1963 with the merger of five independent cities: Kokura, Moji, Yahata, Tobata and Wakamatsu. Originally built in 1602, Kokura Castle is surrounded by Katsuyama Park, known for its spring cherry blossoms. Head to Riverwalk Kitakyushu mall for some "retail therapy" or step back in time with the vintage locomotives on display at the Kyushu Railway History Museum.
