Ohara is a port on the east coast of Iriomote island, which is the biggest of the Yaeyama Islands. Although a modest size island, it does not have a landing strip, so all visitors must enter the island via boat.

Getting to Ohara port by bus

The port is located on the east coast of the island. A bus leaves from Ohara and goes into all the surrounding towns from Ohara to Shirahama. Simply tell the bus driver where you're going when getting on and pay when you get off.

About Ohara

Ohara lies on the southern tip of Iriomote, an island that is the largest of the Yaeyama Islands which consists of 19 sub-tropical islands in the south western waters of Okinawa Prefecture (southern most point of Japan). Uehara has good ferry links with Ishigaki, Kohama and Taketomi in Okinawa. Iriomote island's highest peak is Mt. Komi at 469m. There are many activities available on Iriomote Island such as kayaking in the tropical rivers, trekking in the jungle interior and scuba diving on the island's spectacular coral reefs.
