Ferries to and from Ventspils
Stena Line is one of the biggest and most well known ferry companies in Europe. Stena Line's ships have many facilities including lounges, play areas, shops, wi-fi access, bars, cafes and restaurants as well as a choice of comfortable en-suite cabins. With this ferry company you are sure to have a pleasant journey.
Within the city centre, most locations can be reached on foot within 15-20 minutes. Public transportation is run by the local bus company "Ventspils Reiss" with modern blue coloured buses and minibuses. Most bus stops have a map of the routes and schedules for the lines that stop there.
There is a tourist office next to the ferry terminal where you can pick up a map of the city for free and seek guidance on what to do and see in the city.
One place worth visiting is the Livonian Order Castle. It is one of the oldest medieval fortresses that has survived to this day. It is believed that the castle dates to at least 1290 which is the date it was first recorded. Extensive renovation began in 1995 restoring the castle to how it looked in the 19th century.
Dotted throughout the city you will find flower displays. The flowers are arranged not only in flower-beds, but there is also a flower-clock and vivid flower-sculptures. Also throughout the city are numerous colourful cow sculptures that remain from the "Cow Parade" a 2002 international art event.
Next to the port on the southern pier you will the giant blue "sailor-cow" statue. This blue cow statue, about the height of two men, is very impressive and is dressed in traditional blue sailor regalia and definitely worth a visit before you leave the port on your travels.
